COTTON JONES: PARANOID COCOON

She & Him may have defined the brill-building façade of the summer of 2008. Now meet the brooding underbelly of the folk singer duo niche. Cumberland, Md.-based Cotton Jones is set to be a defining face of the weary 2009 landscape of rolling and tumbling troubadours. Comprised of Page Francis alums Michael Nau and Whitney McGraw, Cotton Jones’ first full-length for Suicide Squeeze Records is a churning callback to the alt-country genre in the most downright ‘No Depression’ sense. Nashville ramblers “Blood Red Sentimental Blues” and “Some Strange Rain” are more of a call back to M. Ward and Bonnie “Prince” Billy early albums, whereas “Gotta Cheer Up” is a loungy ode to Van Morrison and Leonard Cohen. The album came out at the end of January and is titled Paranoid Cocoon.

Artist: Cotton Jones
Song: Gotta Cheer Up
