Though it was announced in late January, The Mega Tour is FINALLY upon us! The National and Modest Mouse may be the highest paid opening acts in 2008 when R.E.M.‘s 1-month North American tour kicks off on Friday, May 23rd in Vancouver. We thought we’d check up on what the bands have been up to before this threesome gets its freak on.

Matt Berninger and The National played 6 shows in 8 days spanning Portugal, The UK, and Dublin last week. They’re currently in the midst of a 6 day hiatus leading up to the BC show, and are probably nursing jet lag infused hang overs the size of baby leprechauns. On a more serious note, the band designed a t-shirt for the Yellow Bird Project earlier this year to help raise money for underprivileged children and families in NYC.

Modest Mouse seemed to be taking it relatively easy early in 2008, but they began writing new songs in March for their next album. They also announced a more extensive North American tour. They’ll play a few solo shows spliced intermittently throughout the R.E.M. tour, as well as a month beyond. After their last show of the “Mega Tour” they’ll play 10 more dates starting in South Beach and concluding in Michigan at the Rothbury Festival.

R.E.M. hit the promotion circuit hard the past couple months in accordance with their April 1st release of Accelerate. The album peaked at #1 on several international charts and has enjoyed superfluous record sales. In March, the band played a show at the Austin City Limits studio which will air on PBS stations May 24th.

I’M GONNA DJ (Live) BY R.E.M.:

We should all do our best to make it to one of these shows. These bands offer unique traits which will offset each other perfectly in succession. Congrats to the tour promoters and bands for making this happen. It’s going to be F’n great.
