Ah, Memorial Day, a three day weekend, BBQ, friends, laughter, lounging and music. It goes by in a blur and you don’t realize until it is too late that it’s over, and the anticipation of the next lazy three day weekend builds to a point of distraction. Luckily, the time to fret is not now. We have plenty of great music from Vega, Crystal Stilts, and Grizzly Bear. Let’s get this Reel going so I can begin my weekend.

Artist: Vega
Song: No Reasons
Artist: The Antlers
Song: Two

Grizzly Bear Gives Us “Two Weeks”

So are you tired of all this Grizzly Bear talk? Well, you shouldn’t be. This little clip is a doozy. With its plunking piano, to the “ooh…aah” choruses, the song is a slice of sublime. The video is strange in combining slow-mo with very long pauses on awkward facial expressions. The end seals the deal. Interesting juxtaposition.

Two Weeks

Crystal Stilts Find What They Need in “Love Is A Wave”

Public domain is a beautiful thing. The ease and accessibility coupled with creativity always yields interesting results. When I saw Crystal Stilts live, after all the hype, I didn’t really buy it. I’m willing to give bands second chances, and with this latest video, the song has a vivacity that the live show did not. The dynamic is interesting and it has some nice sonic textures.

Tortoise Wants You To “Prepare Your Coffin”

It’s all about preparedness for these guys. This great instrumental covers some cool areas with a unique flow to it. It’s crisp and reminds me of chase scenes from 70s action movies set in France. The video provides a nice introduction to the sound with great scenic shots, telephone lines, and great lighting. Follow the photographer and enjoy this great tune.

Cold War Kids Prove Interactivity is Where It Is At

Remember that cool little Black Moth Super Rainbow where you can play around the skyline and enjoy that crazy guy on the trampoline? Well, Cold War Kids upped the ante with this incredibly cool and very interactive video for “I’ve Seen Enough”. Choose a color, change the track, you can mute/unmute different members and, in a sense, create a different feel to the song.

Street Sweeper Social Club and Trent Invite You To…

Kick out the Jams! All the love in the world for MC5 and anytime they get mentioned it makes me happy. When Trent Reznor, Boots Riley, and Tom Morello decide to cover them, well my ears just perk up with delight. Pretty straightforward take, but you have to love the energy, Morello’s awesome solo skills and Boots’ dancing. Always wondered why this and “Teenage Lust” weren’t covered more.

Sunset Rubdown Tour Dates

I dropped “Idiot Heart” in a previous Reel, and if you couldn’t tell we are huge fans of these guys. The Wolf Parade/Sunset Rubdown/Handsome Furs collective have been aces. What’s even better is the fact you can catch Sunset Rubdown on tour in addition to Handsome Furs. Hopefully 2010 means seeing Wolf Parade live. All dates below:
