INDIE NEWS REEL: WINTER FLOWER

by charles poladian

It was a time for ghosts, ghouls, CMJ, and sunlight. October has come and left us bitter. That night where I gained an hour was a precious gift that loving October could only bring. Unfortunately November shakes sleep from her gentle head from a year of slumber and her gift is darkness at five in the evening. But that’s the breaks kid. Damned if you do and damned if you’re Reel. Luckily the concert season is in full swing and Thanksgiving is approaching, giving everyone an excuse to be a glutton. To kick us off, we have a great little guitar track from Palmyra. In addition to singing, front woman Gina Pensiero runs One Sweet Song and assists in curating an acoustic performance space in Brooklyn called The 50/50. But enough chatter, let’s reel.

New Albums Announced…

An Acoustic EP from Metric, a debut LP from Sticken City and a sophomore release from Yeasayer

Oh album releases the bane of anyone. You’ll get the news that a band you dig is all set to release something new but little else. That painful wait of dread, anticipation, fear, and compulsive obsession that some minutiae of detail will be dropped can be too much to bear. But for anything good, we must wait you know, like wine, relationships, fruit, etc. On that note let’s talk about the releases.

Metric, always in touch with their fans, are extending an acoustic EP for those who cannot get enough. Plug In Plug Out will contain five tracks off of Fantasies all stripped down to their core. You can buy it now over at Amazon, but the best bet might be to wait until November 27th. At that time, head over to ILoveMetric.com and buy the album directly and you’ll get some bonus tracks for free. Not a bad deal. Oh, by the way Canadians are screwed until 2010 due to contractual issues. Sorry.

Plug In Plug Out Track listing:
1. Gimme Sympathy
2. Gold Guns Girls
3. Help I’m Alive
4. Satellite Mind
5. Twilight Galaxy

Now it is time for our second female fronted band, Stricken City to release an album. Their debut Song About People I Know was just released and it is sure to be a crowd pleaser. Fresh off their CMJ debut, the band’s got a fresh sound mixing some electronics with crashing guitar and catchy pop hooks. Seems simple but the shuffling and rolling vocals are the real draw.

Now, this is the release you’ve heard about. Yeasayer is set to release Odd Blood on February 9th. “Ambling Alp” was released and if you head over to AmblingAlp.com you can snag your own mp3 (if you have yet to do so). Anyway, All Hour Cymbals was sheer genius and I know there are some who are skeptical (won’t name names) but I’m more optimistic.

Odd Blood Track Listing
1. The Children
2. Ambling Alp
3. Madder Red
4. I Remember
5. O.N.E.
6. Love Me Girl
7. Rome
8. Strange Reunions
9. Mondegreen
10. Grizelda

Tour Dates, We All Need Dates, New Shows from Miike Snow and Drink Up Buttercup

We all need a little distraction and luckily these guys are going to provide it for us. I figure this pairing is a nice contrast, a subtle play on the palette. First up is Miike Snow, the band of icy jingles, and polished pop gems like “Animal”. The trio is set to hit the road in the spring, sure to melt the snow and warm up the dancefloors. The band is playing some bigger venues this time around (like Music Hall of Williamsburg and Webster Hall) and it’ll be interesting to see how far they have come.

3/26/10 – Brooklyn, NY @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
3/27/10 – New York, NY @ Webster Hall
3/31/10 – Boston, MA @ Paradise

4/13/10 – Seattle, WA @ Showbox at the Market
4/14/10 – Portland, OR @ Hawthorne Theater
4/15/10 – San Francisco, CA @ The Independent

With all that sheen and polish, the rough around and delightfully unkempt Drink Up Buttercup is also hitting the road this month! They were a hit at CMJ and have been getting plenty of praise. Heck, even Andrew W.K. remixed them. The band’s take on psychedelic hooks and jangly hooks instantly envelop you into their music. Check them out when they come near you.
