DAVID BYRNE: NEW RELEASE / NEW NAME

by jerrison

Back on December 14th, David Byrne announced through his digital newsletter that he had completed his long-awaited CD project with Fatboy Slim, producing “an upbeat series of songs” featuring a myriad of guest vocalists including Florence Welch, Sharon Jones, Cyndi Lauper, Sia, Santigold, and St. Vincent. The 22-track compilation is titled Here Lies Love and is a tribute to Imelda Marcos and the woman who raised her, Estrella Cumpas. Marcos was First Lady of the Philippines in the 60′s, having been married to former president Ferdinand Marcos. Imelda went from beauty queen at the age of 18, to influential political figure, earning the nickname The “Iron Butterfly.” The album comes out February 23rd on Todomundo/Nonesuch Records.

Artist: David Byrne
Song: Office Cowboy

In the introduction of the disc, Byrne writes:

“The story I am interested in is about asking what drives a powerful person-what makes them tick? How do they make and then remake themselves? I thought to myself, wouldn’t it be great if-as this piece would be principally composed of clubby dance music-one could experience it in a club setting? Could one bring a ‘story’ and a kind of theater to the disco? Was that possible? If so, wouldn’t that be amazing!”

Speaking of powerful people, Byrne himself seems to be contemplating a name change. After explaining the new release with Slim, he left us with an interesting sign off to his newsletter:

“In the meantime, I have decided to rebrand myself, inspired by Philip Morris changing their name to Altria, Blackwater to Xe, and the train I’m riding on right now that calls itself Acela – none of which mean anything, but they are cleverly evocative. When I decide on the magic word, you’ll be the first to know.”
