Yes, we all know by now Austin and its residents are weird…a little off their rockers maybe. But credit must be given to the city that hosts two of the most badass music and arts events of the year…South by Southwest and Austin City Limits. This year ACL is boasting 130 bands in 3 days (September 26-28th) at the Zilker Park in Austin. The only close alternative this summer for us New Yorkers is the All Points West fest in Jersey City…which in comparison to ACL is more like…well I won’t even waste my time, there is no comparison (except maybe in price, excluding traveling costs, a 3 day pass to ACL is a bargain at $170 compared to APW’s $260 for almost 100 less acts).

The lineup was just released this weekend, and I’m already planning on how I’m getting my ass to Texas
this September and who’s couch I’m going to crash on. Some of the many highlights include David Byrne, Beck, Robert Plant and Allison Kraus, Raconteurs, Hot Chip, Black Keys, M. Ward, Jenny Lewis, Conor Oberst, Iron & Wine, Gnarls Barkley, N.E.R.D., Manu Chao, and the list goes on. Aside from the big namers, the fest this year is hosting some great up and coming artists as well, including my current fav Brooklyn duo MGMT. There is definitely something for just about everyone’s musical palette. My recommendation is pick
up a weekend pass and call that friend or friend of a friend of yours that just moved to Austin (we’ve all
got one) before their couch fills up. Definitely my idea of a great way to end what looks to be shaping up as one scorcher of a summer.
